The fenestration industry continues to grow and strives for buildings that are both environmentally friendly and energy efficient. FGIA actively participates in sustainability initiatives, with a focus on the fenestration and glazing industry.

FGIA Efforts

The Sustainability Steering Committee oversees the various committees and task groups involved in establishing standard practices that lead to product sustainability - from component development to structural integrity.

In collaborative partnership among FGIA, the National Glass Association (NGA) and the Window and Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA), the Product Category Rule (PCR) for Fenestration Systems was published on January 29, 2024, and is valid through December 31, 2028. This PCR provides manufacturers with the base document needed to develop Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). EPDs provide a means for manufacturers to take comprehensive, third-party verified Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and transform them into standardized declaration labels for their products.

Formerly known as the Windows PCR, this comprehensive new version more accurately describes the diverse range of fenestration products covered by this standard. This enables the PCR to serve as an even greater and more helpful resource for those interested in using this PCR to develop EPDs as part of a focus on and commitment to sustainability.
