No surprise that the Women in Glass + Fenestration event is my favorite part of GlassBuild each year! The keynote speaker was the colorful (no one wears pink better) and insightful Stefanie Couch, Founder of Grit Blueprint.
She encouraged the room full of industry women to not undervalue our story and provided three actionable tips to build confidence.
- Start before you’re ready
- Use your strengths
- Stay persistent
She summarized her strategy for success with the formula: Courage + Consistency = Confidence. These principles are key to enhancing professional visibility and building your personal brand.
Following her keynote, Stefanie served as moderator for the Women Leaders Panel, which included Sheronda Carr, CEO of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), and Lakisha Woods, CAE, President and CEO of the National Glass Association. The discussion covered visibility, retention and the future outlook for women in construction.
When asked how a woman should advocate for herself, Sheronda replied, “Just do it!” It’s not always easy, but women must speak up. Lakisha encouraged everyone to highlight companies that are actively implementing plans to elevate women. Acknowledging those in our industry who are advocates only helps to ensure more women are represented.
“Relationships and networking are critical,” noted Stefanie. Lakisha agreed and encouraged us to look for people who think differently than you. “Learn from others and share that knowledge,” she said.
Lakisha stressed, “Women must champion other women.” Stefanie echoed this sentiment, adding that the table is big enough for all of us. “We have to pull others up as we rise.”
Overall, the panel’s message was clear:
- Give encouragement
- Try new things
- Be confident
Building a stronger future for women in the construction industry requires interlacing inclusion into every blueprint and conversation. This event truly filled my cup with encouragement.
If you’re a woman in the fenestration and glazing industry, I encourage you to connect with me to share experiences and goals. I’d love to hear your story!
